President Mahama Nominates Dr. Johnson Asiamah as Bank of Ghana Governor.

 

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah to serve as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, pending approval by the Council of State. This nomination follows the acceptance of a formal request by the current Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, to proceed on terminal leave ahead of his retirement on March 31, 2025.

Dr. Asiamah previously held the position of Second Deputy Governor at the Bank of Ghana from 2016 to 2017. He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom and possesses extensive experience in monetary policy formulation, financial stability regulation, and economic research. With over 23 years of service at the central bank, Dr. Asiamah has been instrumental in shaping Ghana’s banking policies.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Asiamah has demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing sound monetary and exchange rate policies, fostering a stable financial system, and promoting accelerated economic growth in Ghana. His deep understanding of the nation’s financial landscape positions him well to lead the central bank during this pivotal period.

The nomination is now subject to the approval of the Council of State. If confirmed, Dr. Asiamah is expected to oversee key financial policies aimed at ensuring sustainable economic development, price stability, and ongoing financial sector reforms.

This leadership transition comes as Dr. Ernest Addison prepares to conclude his tenure, having served as Governor since April 2017. His decision to proceed on terminal leave aligns with the protocols outlined in the Bank of Ghana Act, 2002 (Act 612), as amended.

Dr. Asiamah’s extensive experience and prior leadership roles within the Bank of Ghana are anticipated to contribute significantly to the institution’s mission of maintaining monetary stability and supporting Ghana’s economic growth.
