Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju Dies Tragically in Ghana Boxing Match
The Ghanaian boxing community has been left in mourning following the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju during a professional bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
Olanrewaju, 40 years old was competing in a light heavyweight fight against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu on Saturday, March 30, 2025. The fight was progressing into the third round when the Nigerian boxer suddenly lost his balance and collapsed against the ropes.
Medical personnel at the venue rushed to his aid but all efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful. He was immediately transported by ambulance to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following Olanrewaju’s tragic passing many in the boxing community are calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of his death. Some experts have also urged boxing commissions to enhance medical screening and safety protocols for fighters before matches.
The Ghana Boxing Authority has assured that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
