New Mobile Money Fraud Tactics Exposed: How Fraudsters Are Targeting Ghanaians.

A new and sophisticated mobile money fraud scheme is being used by fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting Ghanaians. This alarming tactic involves a coordinated effort to deceive victims into unknowingly granting access to their mobile money wallets, resulting in the loss of their hard-earned funds.

The fraudsters begin by calling their target, claiming they have mistakenly sent money to the victim’s mobile money account. This initial call is meant to create confusion and urgency in the victim’s mind. Shortly after the first call ends, another person calls, posing as a representative of the mobile network provider—usually MTN.

The supposed “MTN official” informs the victim that there is an attempt to withdraw money from their account and offers to help protect their mobile wallet. They then send the victim a short code and instruct them to confirm it to prevent unauthorized access.

However, what victims don’t realize is that this code grants the fraudsters full access to their mobile money wallet. Once the code is provided, the fraudsters immediately withdraw all the funds in the wallet, leaving the victim devastated.

On January 24, 2025, a Ghanaian citizen fell victim to this scam. The individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, was deceived into believing that they were protecting their wallet when, in fact, they unknowingly gave the fraudsters access to it. Within minutes, their entire mobile money balance was wiped out.

The victim shared their story to warn others about this new fraudulent activity.

Mobile money fraud has become increasingly common, and fraudsters are constantly devising new ways to trick users. Here are steps to protect yourself from falling victim to this scam:
1. Never Share Your PIN or Confirmation Codes: Mobile network providers like MTN, Vodafone, and AirtelTigo will never ask you for your PIN or confirmation codes over the phone.
2. Verify Calls: If someone calls claiming to be from your mobile network provider, hang up and call the official customer service line to confirm the authenticity of the call.
3. Avoid Acting Under Pressure: Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency to confuse victims. Stay calm and think critically before taking any action.
4. Report Suspicious Activity: If you receive calls or messages that seem fraudulent, report them immediately to your mobile network provider.
5. Educate Others: Share information about these scams with friends and family to help protect them from falling victim.

Mobile network providers in Ghana, including MTN, have continuously warned the public about mobile money fraud. They emphasize that customers should never disclose sensitive information over the phone and have set up hotlines for reporting fraud.

The Ghana Police Service has also urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any fraudulent activity.

The new tactics used by mobile money fraudsters highlight the need for heightened vigilance among mobile money users in Ghana. By staying informed and cautious, individuals can protect themselves and their funds from falling into the hands of these criminals.

Let this serve as a warning to all Ghanaians: never share your personal information, confirmation codes, or PINs with anyone. Together, we can outsmart these fraudsters and safeguard our hard-earned money.
