John Kwadwo Gyapong Defends Leadership Role at Age 74 During Vetting as Oti Regional Minister-Designate

On January 23, 2025, the vetting of John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Regional Minister-Designate for the Oti Region, took an intriguing turn when a member of the Appointment Committee questioned his age and prolonged political career.

The committee member asked, “At 74 years old and a father of ten, why have you held so many influential positions, including serving as a three-time parliamentarian, regional chairman for the NDC in both the Oti and Volta regions, and as constituency chairman? Isn’t it time for you to pass the baton to your children?”

The question, though unexpected, was met with a calm and confident response from Gyapong, who used the opportunity to reaffirm his dedication to Ghana and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Gyapong Defends His Continued Service

In his response, Gyapong pointed to President Nana Akufo-Addo as an example of leadership at an advanced age. “If Nana Akufo-Addo can serve as president at the age of 72 and leave office at 80, there is no reason I cannot continue to serve the people of Ghana,” he stated.

Gyapong highlighted his deep roots in the NDC, noting, “I am a founding member of the NDC party. I’ve spent decades serving and supporting the party’s growth, and I am still passionate about seeing it succeed.”

He emphasized that his age does not diminish his ability to lead effectively, but rather enhances it with the wisdom and experience he has gained over the years.

Balancing Youthful Energy with Experience

Addressing the call for younger leaders, Gyapong acknowledged the value of fresh ideas and energy brought by the youth but argued that seasoned politicians play an equally critical role in governance.
“While younger generations bring innovation, experienced leaders provide invaluable guidance and a deep understanding of Ghana’s political landscape,” he explained.

Gyapong expressed his commitment to mentoring the next generation while continuing to serve the NDC and the nation. “I believe my work is far from over, and there is still so much I can do to support Ghana’s development,” he added.

A Lifetime of Service to the NDC and Ghana

Over the years, John Kwadwo Gyapong has held numerous influential positions, including serving as a three-time Member of Parliament and as a regional chairman for the NDC in both the Oti and Volta regions. His leadership has been pivotal in strengthening the party’s structure and ensuring its relevance in Ghanaian politics.

Conclusion

Gyapong’s vetting session served as a reminder of the ongoing debate about leadership succession, generational collaboration, and the value of experience in politics. His response not only defended his position but also reinforced his unwavering commitment to the NDC and the people of Ghana.

With a wealth of experience and a passion for service, John Kwadwo Gyapong is poised to bring seasoned leadership to the Oti Region if approved as Regional Minister.
