Investigative Journalist Erastus Asare Donkor Fled Ghana Before 2024 Elections Over Death Threats.

Renowned environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor of the Multimedia Group has revealed that he was forced to leave Ghana ahead of the 2024 elections due to threats on his life. The threats, he disclosed, were linked to his investigative reports on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, February 1, 2025, Erastus Donkor recounted the difficult period leading up to his temporary departure from Ghana.

“It’s been difficult for me for some time, and at some point, before the elections, after assessing my security, I had to go out of the country for a while,” he revealed.

According to him, his continuous exposes on illegal mining had angered powerful individuals, making him a target. The threats he received were not only verbal but were also delivered in person and through private messages.

Despite his temporary exile, Erastus Donkor stated that the intimidation had not stopped upon his return to Ghana. He disclosed that he still receives disturbing threats from unknown individuals.

“After coming back, I’ve received all manner of threats coming from people in person and in my inboxes,” he stated.

This revelation has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in Ghana, especially those exposing environmental crimes and corruption. Illegal mining has remained a major issue in the country, with journalists and activists often facing intimidation for highlighting the devastating effects of galamsey on Ghana’s water bodies, farmlands, and forests.

Many have called on the Ghanaian government and security agencies to take urgent action in protecting journalists and ensuring their safety.

The threats against Erastus Asare Donkor reflect the growing dangers faced by journalists who expose illegal activities. Press freedom advocates are urging authorities to investigate the threats and hold those responsible accountable.

Ghana has often been praised for its democratic values, but attacks on journalists remain a major concern. As the nation continues its fight against galamsey, the safety of journalists reporting on the issue must not be overlooked.
