Kwesi Pratt Jnr. Criticizes Education Minister’s Announcement on Teacher Trainee Allowances

Veteran journalist and managing editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has expressed strong disapproval of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu’s recent announcement regarding the suspension of feeding allowances for teacher trainees. Pratt contends that such significant policy decisions should be preceded by comprehensive consultations and the establishment of an Education Review Committee, as pledged by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on “Good Morning Ghana,” Pratt emphasized the importance of thorough deliberation before implementing major educational reforms. He expressed concern that unilateral announcements by government officials could lead to public confusion and unrest.

“Education is very important for our survival,” Pratt stated, highlighting the historical significance of free education in Ghana’s development. He urged that discussions about educational policies transcend political point-scoring and focus on the nation’s well-being.

Pratt’s remarks come in response to Minister Iddrisu’s declaration that the government plans to suspend feeding allowances for teacher trainees, citing the policy’s unsustainability and misalignment with global best practices in higher education. The minister proposed replacing the feeding program with an enhanced student loan scheme to empower students to manage their own living expenses, including meals.

This development has ignited a broader debate about the future of teacher trainee allowances in Ghana. While some argue that these allowances support students and encourage enrollment in teacher training institutions, others believe they impose a financial strain on the government.

Pratt’s critique underscores the necessity for inclusive dialogue and careful consideration in policymaking, especially in sectors as pivotal as education. His call for restraint and consultation reflects a broader concern about ensuring that educational reforms are implemented thoughtfully and effectively.
