Wendy Shay Opens Up About Online Trolling and How It Nearly Ended Her Music Career
Ghanaian Afropop and Afrobeats sensation Wendy Shay has revealed the emotional toll that online bullying took on her during the early stages of her music career. In a heartfelt interview on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Shopsydoo the RuffTown Records artiste shared how relentless cyberbullying nearly forced her to abandon her dreams.
According to Wendy Shay the backlash she faced when she first entered the music industry was overwhelming. Many critics accused her of attempting to replace or imitate the late Ebony Reigns who was also signed to RuffTown Records before her untimely passing. This constant comparison and online harassment deeply affected her mental health and strained her family relationships.
At a point, my mum asked me to quit music and return to Germany because the trolling was overwhelming and it affected everyone in my family, Wendy Shay revealed. Some of my relatives were even kind of shy to associate with me at the time.
She went on to describe the cruelty of some social media users recalling how edited images mocking her appearance were widely circulated. “Imagine they take your face, edit it to make you look like an old woman, and start mocking and laughing at you, she said. They even said I wasn’t talented enough. It was crazy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but it built me.
Despite the mental pressure, Wendy Shay found strength in the support she received from fans, team members, and others who believed in her potential. That support helped her persevere and continue creating music.
Today, Wendy Shay is one of the leading female voices in Ghana’s music scene. She has won multiple awards, including accolades at the Ghana Music Awards and the 3Music Awards. Her latest release, It’s Too Late, is gaining international recognition and performing well on global music charts.
Wendy Shay’s story is a testament to resilience, reminding both artists and fans alike of the personal battles many celebrities face behind the spotlight. Her journey also highlights the importance of kindness online, the impact of cyberbullying, and the value of a strong support system.
