Tragedy Strikes as Asante Kotoko Fan Stabbed to Death After Defeat to Nsoatreman
A tragic incident marred Asante Kotoko’s 1-0 loss to Nsoatreman FC on Sunday, January 2, 2025, as a devoted fan of the club was fatally stabbed following an altercation after the match.
According to an official statement released by the club, the deceased supporter, identified as ‘Pooley,’ was stabbed five times and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital despite medical efforts to save him.
The exact cause of the attack remains unclear, but eyewitness reports suggest that tensions between rival supporters escalated into violence. Security personnel at the stadium reportedly struggled to contain the chaos.
Asante Kotoko has strongly condemned the incident and urged calm among its supporters while calling on authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.
The tragedy compounded an already intense match, which saw an on-field brawl between players of both teams. In a video shared by a fan at the stadium, Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was seen punching two Nsoatreman players on the sidelines, leading to a scuffle. Kotoko captain Justice Blay also got involved, engaging in a physical confrontation with several Nsoatreman players, while home fans threw objects at the visiting team.
As a result, both Camara and Blay were sent off, and Kotoko later received another red card, reducing their squad to eight players before eventually losing the match.
This unfortunate incident has sparked widespread concern over security at football matches in Ghana, with calls for stronger measures to prevent violence both on and off the field. Authorities are expected to provide updates on investigations in the coming days.
