Traffic Light Failure Causes Serious Accident at Mallam Junction
An accident involving a commercial vehicle and a private car occurred at Mallam Junction on the evening of Saturday, April 6, 2025, at approximately 8:28 PM, causing injuries and heavy traffic congestion in the area.
According to eyewitness accounts the crash happened due to a malfunctioning traffic light at the busy intersection. A Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle with registration number GR 2800-20, which was traveling from Accra Kaneshie to Agona Swedru in the Central Region with a full load of passengers collided with a Honda CRV with registration number GR 7954-15 which was heading from Kasoa towards Mallam-Gbawe.
The accident occurred when the Honda CRV attempted to turn left towards Mallam while the Toyota Hiace was moving straight towards Swedru. Due to the faulty traffic light and the absence of police officers to direct traffic both drivers attempted to cross the intersection at the same time resulting in a collision.
Several passengers in the commercial vehicle sustained various degrees of injury and were quickly rushed to Akaway Hospital, located at McCarthy Hill Junction, for emergency medical treatment.
The crash also caused significant traffic congestion along the Mallam-Kaneshie-Kasoa stretch leaving many commuters stranded for over an hour. Some drivers expressed frustration over the non-functioning traffic light and the lack of traffic management calling on authorities to urgently fix the traffic signal and ensure regular police presence at the junction.
Residents and road users are urging the Ghana Police Service the Department of Urban Roads, and other relevant stakeholders to take immediate steps to prevent future accidents at the intersection, which has become a known hotspot for road crashes.
As of now police are yet to issue an official statement but investigations into the cause of the accident are expected to begin soon.
