Students Protest Poor School Conditions in Asutifi South
Students in the Asutifi South District have staged a peaceful protest over poor infrastructure and inadequate learning materials calling for immediate attention from authorities. The demonstration led by a concerned student identified as Yaya highlighted critical issues including the lack of desks and chairs which continues to affect the quality of teaching and learning in the area.
Yaya also raised questions about the use of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) funds expressing frustration that students have not seen any visible benefits from the money collected over the years. According to the students promises have been made several times, but very little has changed.
In response to the protest, the District Chief Executive (DCE) nominee for Asutifi South, Mr. Asabre Donkor acknowledged the legitimacy of the students’ concerns describing them as genuine and urgent. He praised the swift intervention of key stakeholders including traditional leaders, Ghana Police Service and officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES), for their roles in maintaining calm and preventing any damage to school property during the protest.
Mr. Donkor assured the students and the general public that plans were underway to address the infrastructural challenges facing schools in the district. He emphasized the importance of creating a safe and conducive learning environment adding that education remains a top priority for the local assembly.
He also urged calm among the student body, promising transparency and collaboration with the PTA school authorities, and community members to ensure that resources are used effectively moving forward.
The protest has reignited conversations around educational infrastructure in rural Ghana and the need for accountability in the use of PTA funds. Many community members have backed the students, calling on authorities to act swiftly and restore confidence in the local education system.
As the district awaits official confirmation of Mr. Donkor’s appointment many are hopeful that his assurance will translate into visible improvements in the coming months.
