Sir Obama Pokuase remains in custody despite meeting bail — NPP members cry foul

Social media activist and New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter Daniel Adomako  popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuase  is still being held by security authorities even after an Accra Circuit Court granted him bail and he reportedly satisfied the conditions, prompting accusations from prominent party members that his continued detention is politically motivated.

Sir Obama was arrested on August 13, 2025, in connection with ongoing security operations targeting the illegal possession and public display of sophisticated arms. An Accra court later set his bail at GH¢50,000 with three sureties, two of whom must be salaried workers and one a public-sector employee earning not less than GH¢3,000 monthly. Despite meeting those conditions he remained in police custody overnight, according to court and media reports.

NPP figures and online commentators have reacted angrily to the delay in executing the court’s bail order. Several party-affiliated social media accounts and aides to senior NPP leaders say the police have stalled Sir Obama’s release by demanding additional internal verifications  including requests to the Controller to confirm payslips for some sureties even after the court certified that the bail conditions had been met. Critics say this procedural hold-up looks like selective enforcement.

Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini  a lawyer and an aide to former Vice‑President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia  publicly questioned why the police had not executed the court’s bail order. He described the repeated requests for administrative checks as inexplicable after the court had already verified the sureties and asked that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) finalize the release process. Akbar and other NPP voices argue that the true motive is Sir Obama’s repeated online criticism of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Other party figures echoed the concern. In separate posts party aides warned that using state power to detain a critic after he has met judicial conditions risks setting a worrying precedent for political speech and civil liberties. One senior NPP aide said the delays cut deep into the progress we have made in this country,” calling for immediate adherence to the court’s order.

Police position and ongoing investigation
The Ghana Police Service has framed Sir Obama’s arrest as part of an intelligence‑led operation aimed at dismantling unlawful arms networks. Authorities say the investigation covers videos and images circulating on social media that allegedly show individuals brandishing high‑grade firearms; Sir Obama was taken in to assist inquiries, according to official statements. Police confirmed the arrest when it was made public and said the probe remains active.

Media outlets covering the story also reported that other content creators arrested in connection with related matters including a popular TikTok personality were granted bail by the same court but likewise remained in custody for a time because their bail conditions had not been met immediately. That suggests the situation is not limited to a single individual, though political actors emphasize Sir Obama’s high profile within NPP circles and his frequent criticism of policing leadership.

Legal experts say it is routine for police to perform internal verification checks on sureties and documentation when implementing a court’s bail order, but they also note that such checks should not transform into indefinite delays that effectively nullify the court’s decision. If the bail conditions have been certified by the court and the detainee has complied, immediate release is ordinarily required unless there is fresh, legally defensible information to justify continued detention.

As of this writing, Sir Obama remains in custody while his case is scheduled for further hearings. NPP officials and party supporters have vowed to press the matter publicly and legally if necessary calling on the police to respect the court’s ruling. The Ghana Police Service maintains that the probe into illegal arms possession is ongoing and that steps taken are part of that broader investigative effort.
