Residents of Nsawam and Amasaman to Demonstrate Over Stalled Ofankor-Nsawam Road Project

Residents of Nsawam and Amasaman have announced their intention to stage a massive demonstration on Saturday, July 12, to protest the stalled construction of the Ofankor-Nsawam road.

The residents say the deplorable condition of the road has become a source of daily suffering, frequent traffic congestion and increased economic hardship for commuters and businesses that rely on the stretch.

Speaking on Channel One, Nana Kusi Afriyie, the convenor of the protest explained that the demonstration was initially scheduled for Monday but had to be moved to Saturday due to a directive from the security services.

We were planning to have the demonstration on Monday but the security service said they had other engagements so they proposed a shift to Saturday. Our membership is over 1,700. We have also engaged the GPRTU, concerned drivers and drivers in Nsawam and Amasaman. So we have the numbers,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, the resident engineer for the Ofankor-Nsawam road project has given assurances that construction work will resume on April 7, 2025. He revealed that funding challenges had stalled the project but added that funds have now started flowing, paving the way for continuous work.

Now that funds have started flowing, we expect that there will be continuous work. If work continues without further delays it should take another eight to nine months to complete the project after the July deadline, Ing. Bempong told Citi News.

He further explained that most of the major works including the construction of bridges have been completed except for the Nsawam Bridge which still requires attention.

However, the Ministry of Roads and Highways had earlier disclosed that about 80 lawsuits have contributed to the delays in completing the Ofankor-Nsawam road.

Residents and commuters are calling on the government to urgently address these legal and funding issues to ease the heavy traffic and economic burden the stalled road project has caused.

The upcoming demonstration is expected to draw large numbers as the residents are determined to get their concerns heard and to push for a lasting solution to the problem.
