Recent fire out break in Africa which prompted evacuation

Recently, Africa has been dealing with significant fire incidents. In South Africa, a fire in the Usindiso building in Johannesburg in August 2023 resulted in 77 deaths, making it one of the deadliest fires in the country’s history. The building was in a state of neglect, highlighting broader issues with fire safety and building maintenance in Johannesburg (Times Live).

Additionally, North Africa has been experiencing severe wildfires due to a heatwave. In Algeria, wildfires have killed at least 30 people and led to the evacuation of over 1,500 residents. The fires were fueled by extremely high temperatures, reaching up to 48°C (118°F), and strong winds, which have made containment efforts challenging (euronews).

In South Africa, wildfires have also prompted evacuations in coastal towns near Cape Town. Towns like Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay saw residents flee as fires, driven by hot, dry conditions and strong coastal winds, spread rapidly. These fires have caused significant property damage and threatened local nature reserves (Africanews).
