Otumfuo Osei Tutu Intervenes in Bawku Chieftaincy Conflict

The King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has initiated steps to help resolve the long-standing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The intervention comes amid renewed tensions and security concerns in the area.

On Friday, February 14, 2025, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II held a crucial meeting with the leadership of the Mamprusis at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. This meeting, according to Opemsuo FM, the official media outlet of the Ashanti Kingdom, forms part of broader efforts to end the conflict.

Prior to this, the Asantehene also engaged with Ghana’s Minister of Defence and Minister of the Interior. The government believes that resolving the conflict requires a combination of security measures and traditional mediation, with the latter being a key role of the Otumfuo.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has a strong reputation for traditional conflict resolution, having played a crucial role in restoring peace to Dagbon after years of violent chieftaincy disputes. His involvement in Bawku has sparked renewed hope for a lasting resolution to the conflict.

Bawku has been a hotspot for ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts, primarily between the Kusasis and the Mamprusis. These tensions stem from:
• Historical disputes over traditional leadership
• Competition for resources
• Political influences that have deepened divisions

Recent clashes have led to loss of lives and destruction of property, making peace efforts even more critical.

The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence have emphasized the importance of both security interventions and traditional conflict resolution. Security personnel have been deployed in the area, but lasting peace is expected to come through mediation and dialogue.

The involvement of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has raised optimism about a breakthrough in the long-standing conflict. As discussions continue, stakeholders are hopeful that his experience in conflict resolution will help bring stability and unity to Bawku.

With the Asantehene taking an active role in resolving the Bawku chieftaincy conflict, there is growing confidence that peace could soon be restored. The collaboration between traditional authorities and the government will be key in ensuring a sustainable resolution. Ghanaians now wait in hope for a positive outcome.
