NPP Member Alfred Ababio Kumi Arrested by NIB Over Alleged False Publication Regarding Chief Justice Petition

Alfred Ababio Kumi, a known member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reportedly been arrested by officials from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with allegations of publishing false information.

The arrest reportedly stems from a petition Mr. Kumi submitted to former President John Dramani Mahama urging him to dissolve a committee set up to investigate issues related to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. This move appears to have triggered the interest of state security agencies.

According to a report by MyJoyOnline, Mr. Kumi’s legal representative Clement Opoku Gyamfi disclosed the development during an appearance on Asempa FM’s Eko Sii Sen on the morning monitored by mrwoode.com of Friday, May 23, 2025. The lawyer stated that his client was being charged with the publication of false news a criminal offense under Ghana’s legal code.

Further confirmation of the arrest was given by the NPP’s General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua who took to social media to raise alarm. All patriots should rush to Adenta Kumi’s house as over 20 CID and National Security officers are there to pick him up, his post read.

In an interview with Asaase Radio, Alfred Kumi’s mother confirmed the presence of a high number of security officers at their home in Adenta. She stated, They broke the door to his house. They brought a paper (search warrant) but I didn’t take a look at it. They said they need to have a conversation with him so they took him away.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged false publication have not been publicly detailed by the NIB or the CID. However the incident has sparked considerable public and political attention, especially given the sensitive nature of the petition involving Ghana’s Chief Justice.

Legal analysts say the outcome of this case could have broader implications on how politically charged speech and petitions are handled in the country.

The NPP and Mr. Kumi’s legal team are yet to issue a formal statement on the next steps they intend to take.

This is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
