Mussa Dankwah Unveils Potential NDC Flagbearer Contenders Ahead of 2028 Elections
The race to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the 2028 general elections is beginning to take shape as political analyst and Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah has released a list of possible contenders for the party’s flagbearer position.
In a Facebook post shared on Sunday, 14th September 2025, Dankwah described the upcoming contest as “bombastic,” hinting at a potentially intense and competitive internal race. He noted that the names on the list were initially compiled by his team, and since none of the individuals had requested to be removed, it is assumed that they are either open to running or seriously considering the idea.
Four Candidates Already Meeting “Head-to-Head” Criteria
Dankwah revealed that four prominent figures within the NDC have already met the threshold for consideration in what he termed the “head-to-head” stage of the internal review. These individuals include:
Johnson Asiedu Nketia – National Chairman of the NDC
Julius Debrah – Former Chief of Staff
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson – Current Minority Leader in Parliament
Haruna Iddrisu – Former Minority Leader in Parliament
However, Dankwah clarified that these positions are not guaranteed. If another candidate from the wider list gains more public support or performs strongly in internal assessments, the final selection for the head-to-head stage could change.
Extended List of Potential NDC Presidential Candidates
To stimulate public engagement and gather opinions, Dankwah also shared a broader list of individuals who are being considered as potential flagbearer aspirants. The full list includes:
Johnson Asiedu Nketia
Hon. Julius Debrah
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson
Haruna Iddrisu
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa – MP for North Tongu
Eric Opoku – MP for Asunafo South
Prof. Joshua Alabi – Former Vice-Chancellor of UPSA
Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah – MP for Ellembelle
Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije – MP for Ablekuma South
Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah – Former Minister for Trade and Industry
This development comes at a time when the NDC is beginning to prepare for life after former President John Dramani Mahama, who is currently serving his final term as the party’s presidential candidate. Political observers and party insiders believe that this early conversation about leadership succession is crucial for party unity and long-term strategy.
Mussa Dankwah concluded his post by inviting Ghanaians and NDC supporters to share their thoughts on who among the listed individuals they would prefer to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
As the debate gains momentum, the NDC’s internal dynamics are expected to evolve, with public opinion, party loyalty and leadership competence playing major roles in determining who will ultimately emerge as the party’s next presidential candidate.
