Maurice Ampaw Advises Single Men to Choose Customary Marriage for Polygamy Rights

Renowned Ghanaian lawyer, Maurice Ampaw, has advised single men to consider adopting customary marriage instead of ordinance marriage, as it allows them the option of marrying more than one wife.

Speaking on GTV on February 4, 2025, the outspoken private legal practitioner explained that under Ghana’s customary law, men have the legal right to marry multiple women, making it an attractive option for those who do not want to deal with the complications of extramarital affairs.

“Under customary law, you can marry as many women as you want. That is why, these days, some men don’t want ordinance marriage. To avoid the side chick saga, go the customary way so we can have more side chicks promoted to wives because all of them can be registered,” he stated.

Maurice Ampaw also educated viewers on the legal differences between customary marriage and ordinance marriage in Ghana. He explained that:
1. Customary Marriage – This is recognized under Ghanaian tradition and allows a man to marry multiple wives. It follows traditional rites and customs specific to the couple’s ethnic background.
2. Ordinance Marriage – This follows statutory law and is strictly monogamous. Once a person opts for ordinance marriage, they lose the legal right to marry multiple wives.

The lawyer further explained that if a couple in a customary marriage decides to convert it into an ordinance marriage, the process is simple.

“Just go to the Registrar General, pick a form, and fill it out. The procedure is simple. One thing you have to know is that the right to marry more women is taken away from you. Once you decide to move from customary to ordinance, then you are going to tell the Registrar General that you don’t believe in polygamous marriage but you believe in monogamous marriage,” he explained.

Maurice Ampaw’s statement has sparked discussions on social media, with some people agreeing that customary marriage provides flexibility, while others argue that polygamy comes with its own challenges. However, his advice serves as a legal guide for men who wish to understand their marital rights under Ghanaian law.

The choice between customary and ordinance marriage is a personal decision that depends on an individual’s beliefs and preferences. While customary marriage allows polygamy, ordinance marriage enforces strict monogamy. Maurice Ampaw’s advice highlights the importance of knowing the legal implications of each type of marriage before making a commitment.
