Lali X Lola Thank Minister Sam George for Swift Response to Boomplay Royalties Petition

Award-winning Ghanaian music duo Lali X Lola have publicly expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, for his swift and decisive response to their recent petition concerning unpaid royalties from the digital music platform Boomplay.

The duo, known for their hit song Pepper Demm  filed the petition on May 19, 2025, raising concerns about not receiving royalties from Boomplay since April 2023. Just days later, during a discussion on GhanaWeb’s X Space held on May 23, 2025, the artists shared encouraging updates on the matter.

According to Lali X Lola, the minister responded within 36 hours, assigning an expert to address the issue promptly. We actually had a meeting with them this morning and we are grateful they responded within 36 hours. They even tried to reach us earlier but there was a problem with the phone number. They were very responsive, and we appreciate how aggressively they’re pursuing a solution, they noted.

The duo revealed they met with the Director of Digital Technology who had been mandated by Sam George to investigate the issue and draft a report. “It was a very fruitful meeting, they added.

During the meeting, three key concerns were discussed:
1. The need for oversight in the digital music space, particularly regarding royalty payments to artists.
2. Verification of Boomplay’s operational status in Ghana, as questions arose about whether the platform has an official office in the country.
3. The broader conversation about digital royalties, with expectations that the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) will be brought into the dialogue for further clarity and action.

The developments mark a positive step toward increased transparency and accountability in Ghana’s digital music economy, with Lali X Lola commending the Ministry for taking their concerns seriously.

Meanwhile, the duo is also making musical waves, preparing for a highly anticipated live band concert on August 2, 2025, where they plan to showcase their dynamic sound. In addition, they have just dropped a new single titled “Go”, featuring Ghanaian rapper Rappidd further cementing their position in the country’s vibrant music scene.

As the digital music landscape continues to evolve, artists like Lali X Lola are pushing for fairer systems and stronger structures to ensure that creatives are rightfully compensated for their work. Their recent engagement with the ministry may just pave the way for long-term reforms in Ghana’s royalty collection and distribution system.
