Kwabena Adu-Boahene Denies Allegations Amidst Bail Reduction
Former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) Kwabena Adu-Boahene has denied allegations of embezzlement, fraud and illicit financial transactions leveled against him.
Speaking to reporters outside the Accra High Court where his case is being heard, Adu-Boahene maintained his innocence, stating:
I have not been charged with anything yet; none whatsoever.
Despite the accusations he expressed confidence that he would clear his name as the trial proceeds.
Adu-Boahene who led the NSB from 2017 to February 2025 is accused of diverting millions of Ghana cedis in state funds into personal accounts during his tenure. His wife Angela Adjei Boateng, is also facing legal scrutiny.
Following investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) the couple was remanded into custody. However in a recent ruling the Accra High Court reduced Adu-Boahene’s bail conditions from GHS120 million to GHS80 million, while his wife’s bail remains at GHS80 million with two sureties required to be justified.
As part of the bail conditions, the couple:
• Must report to EOCO three times a week
• Cannot travel without express permission from EOCO
Adu-Boahene’s legal counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea has strongly opposed the bail conditions, describing them as unjustifiably harsh and a violation of their rights.
The defense team argued that the initial bail demand of GHS120 million for Adu-Boahene and GHS80 million for his wife was excessive and aimed at keeping them in custody longer than the constitutionally permitted 48-hour period without trial.
The Respondents, with a clear motive to incarcerate the Applicants beyond the 48-hour period as spelled out by the Constitution, have imposed burdensome and unreasonable conditions as a precondition for granting bail,” the lawyers stated.
They further accused the state of obstructing due process by denying their clients proper legal counsel and fair treatment.
Despite the bail reduction, Adu-Boahene and his legal team remain firm in their stance that the allegations against him lack merit. His legal team has expressed optimism that he will meet the revised bail conditions and continue to fight the charges in court.
As the case unfolds, Ghanaians will be closely monitoring developments, particularly regarding the fairness of the trial and the impact of the allegations on national security and governance.
