KSM Shares How He Faked Radio Experience to Land His First Job in Broadcasting

Veteran Ghanaian satirist, filmmaker and talk show host Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM has revealed a surprising chapter from the early days of his career in radio. Speaking in an interview on Joy Learning TV,  monitored by mrwoode.com, KSM shared how he entered the radio industry by pretending to have prior experience he didn’t actually possess.

According to the renowned media personality his journey into radio began after he returned to Ghana from the United States and found it difficult to secure opportunities in film. At the time private radio in Ghana was still a new phenomenon and Joy FM was one of the few stations in operation.

Radio was just beginning to boom. Since things weren’t working out in the film industry I thought to myself why not try radio?” he recounted.

KSM revealed that during his time in the U.S. he developed a strong love for talk radio and often listened to a mix of serious discussions and entertaining shows. That exposure shaped his confidence and creativity when he decided to explore opportunities in radio.

When he heard that Vibe FM was looking for new shows he quickly seized the moment. But there was one challenge: he had no real experience in radio. That didn’t stop him.

They asked if I had done talk radio before. I told them I had hosted talk shows in New York even though I hadn’t, KSM confessed. I just believed I could do it and knew that if I said I had no experience they wouldn’t take a chance on me.

His bold move paid off and KSM eventually became one of the most influential voices on Ghanaian radio and television setting the tone for satirical and thought-provoking talk shows.

However, the celebrated host was quick to advise young people not to repeat his actions in today’s digital age.

Back then, you could get away with it because it was hard to verify. But now, it’s very easy to check someone’s background. If you say you’ve been on radio, they’ll just ask which station and verify it, he cautioned.

KSM’s story, while unconventional, underscores the power of confidence and passion in the face of opportunity but also serves as a reminder that honesty and preparation are more critical than ever in today’s transparent job market.
