Kojo Cue Opens Up on Mental Health Struggles and Calls for Honest Conversations in the Entertainment Industry

Ghanaian rapper Kojo Cue is using his voice for more than just music. In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz the talented artist opened up about his personal battle with mental health and called on fellow musicians and industry stakeholders to take mental well-being seriously.

Born Linford Kennedy Amankwaa, Kojo Cue first revealed his struggles in an earlier interview with YouTuber ZionFelix, but he has now gone deeper, urging the entertainment industry to foster open and honest discussions about mental health.

“For me, acknowledging mental health challenges is not a sign of weakness  it’s an act of strength, he said. Vulnerability is important. We need to normalize asking for help and supporting each other through the hard times.”

The Breaking Point

Kojo Cue disclosed that his mental health challenges were triggered by two traumatic events in 2020 and 2021, details of which he is withholding for now as they tie into themes in his upcoming music projects. These experiences, combined with the emotional strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, pushed him to his breaking point.

“In 2020 and 2021, I faced two back-to-back traumatic experiences that pushed me to my limits, he shared. Those events, along with the isolation and uncertainty brought by COVID, became overwhelming. That was when I knew I needed therapy.

To aid his recovery Cue turned to travel  a tool he describes as instrumental in resetting his mental space. His journeys took him across Africa, Europe and North America, including stays in Nigeria, Kenya the United States and Italy.

A change in environment can do wonders for your mental clarity, he explained. Just like cleaning your room can help you think clearly, moving to a new place forces your brain to process new experiences. That leaves less room for negative thoughts.

In addition to therapy and travel, Kojo Cue found strength in cultivating meaningful friendships and even gardening  all part of his journey to emotional wellness. These practices helped him reconnect with himself and rediscover balance.

He also addressed his absence from the music scene, saying it wasn’t a disappearance, but a purposeful pause. Every moment I spent away from the spotlight had meaning. It shaped who I am now.

Now back in the spotlight and working on new music, Kojo Cue hopes his story will inspire others  particularly within the creative space to prioritize mental health and seek help when needed.

Mental health should not be taboo, he said. We’re all human, and everyone struggles in some way. My hope is that by sharing my journey, others will realize they’re not alone.

Kojo Cue’s powerful message is a timely reminder of the importance of emotional well-being in an industry where pressure, public scrutiny, and personal challenges often go unspoken. As he continues to heal and create, he is also helping to open the door for more honest conversations  one story at a time.
