Johnnie Hughes Urges President Mahama to Call Interior Minister Muntaka to Order
Renowned journalist and host of Johnnie’s Bite on 3FM, Johnnie Hughes, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately caution the Minister of Interior, Muntaka Mohammed, over his recent actions regarding security service recruitment.
Speaking on 3FM on Friday, February 14, 2025, Johnnie Hughes urged President Mahama not to repeat the mistakes of former President Akufo-Addo by allowing individuals accused of irregularities in the security service recruitment process to investigate themselves.
Hughes expressed his concerns about the seven-member committee set up by the Interior Minister to investigate the recruitment process, arguing that it would be unfair for the same individuals who conducted the recruitment to lead the investigation.
“The people of the Republic of Ghana are watching you. I told you earlier this year that the sins of President Akufo-Addo must not be repeated by you. Don’t go down that path—if you do, people will be angry with you. You only have one term to serve. Don’t follow that path. Call Muntaka to order and set things right. The people who carried out the recruitment should not be the same ones investigating it.”
The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed, recently established a seven-member committee to review the process of recruiting personnel into Ghana’s security services. The committee’s primary task is to assess the current recruitment system, identify challenges, and recommend improvements to ensure a fair and transparent process.
This move follows widespread concerns about favoritism, bribery, and a lack of transparency in the recruitment of security personnel. The government aims to restore public confidence in the process by making sure that only qualified individuals are selected based on merit.
Johnnie Hughes’ remarks reflect the growing frustration among Ghanaians about irregularities in public sector employment. Many citizens expect President Mahama to take immediate action to prevent any form of bias in the investigation.
The seven-member committee is expected to conduct a thorough review and submit its findings and recommendations to the Interior Minister for further action. Ghanaians will be watching closely to see whether the committee’s work will lead to genuine reforms in the country’s security service recruitment process.
