John Mahama Reveals Ongoing Investigations Into African Games Financial Scandal

Former President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that a number of government officials have been questioned over alleged financial irregularities related to Ghana’s hosting of the 13th African Games in Accra.

Speaking during a national address on his administration’s first 120 days under a renewed social contract with the people of Ghana, the NDC flagbearer reiterated his commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance.

The 2023 African Games, hosted in March 2024, were Ghana’s first time staging the prestigious continental sporting event. However, the Games were overshadowed by controversy following revelations that the country spent over $245 million on the event.

According to available data, $195 million was allocated for infrastructure, including the construction of new stadiums and athlete accommodations. An additional $15 million was reportedly spent on feeding athletes and officials during the 15-day competition, while $4.5 million was earmarked for games management systems and accreditation tags. Operational costs amounted to another $48 million.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) has defended the expenditures, citing the scale and importance of the event, but public concern continues to grow.

Mahama, addressing the issue directly, said:

“A cornerstone of our commitment to good governance and accountability is tackling corruption and eliminating waste. I promised to initiate inquiries and forensic audits into several critical matters of public interest. This war against corruption continues unabated. A number of officials have been invited and questioned concerning the 13th African Games.

Reports suggest that former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif was among those questioned by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) in April. However, it remains unclear whether his interrogation was directly related to the Games’ financial outlay.

Meanwhile, the new Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, has called for a full parliamentary investigation into the Games’ budget. His call aligns with ongoing efforts by civil society organizations to ensure accountability.

The Forum for Accountable Governance, along with other watchdog groups, has officially petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to probe potential financial mismanagement associated with the Games.

As pressure mounts, Ghanaians are watching closely to see whether these investigations will lead to prosecutions or reforms in the management of public funds.
