Gyakie Unveils Sankofa and Announces Deeply Personal Debut Album After Midnight

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Gyakie has returned to the spotlight with Sankofa  a soul-stirring new single that signals a profound evolution in her artistry. The emotionally resonant track co-written with longtime collaborator Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra)  sets the stage for her highly anticipated debut album After Midnight a project that promises raw honesty deep introspection and the unmistakable voice of an artist coming fully into her own.

Drawing from the rich symbolism of the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Sankofa which means to go back and retrieve what has been lost the single explores themes of emotional reflection, reconnection and truth. With a stripped-back production style that spotlights Gyakie’s emotive vocals, Sankofa captures the ache and beauty of looking inward and embracing vulnerability.

This new release doesn’t just showcase her vocal finesse; it marks the beginning of a bold new chapter in Gyakie’s career one rooted in emotional storytelling and spiritual awareness.

Scheduled for release soon After Midnight is Gyakie’s most personal body of work yet. Inspired by the quiet and creatively charged hours that follow midnight, the album was crafted during moments of solitude where inspiration flows and emotions rise to the surface.

Almost all the songs on the album were recorded after midnight Gyakie revealed. It’s within those hours that I find my best inspiration to write. The peace and quiet, the sounds from the birds, the serenity everything about that time fuels my creativity.”

But the album is not just a product of artistic inspiration; it is also a reflection of Gyakie’s emotional landscape. She speaks candidly about using the still hours after midnight to process grief and solitude:
I’ve done a lot of crying after midnight too. When I’m in my down moments, I schedule my tears for when I get home from work, then I let it all out.

A powerful influence behind this emotional depth is a cherished family tradition: her mother praying over her and her siblings after midnight, a ritual that continues to shape her connection to the hour.

Gyakie first broke onto the global music scene with her 2021 Seed EP which featured the breakout hit Forever. In 2022, she followed up with My Diary an EP that included collaborations with global stars like Davido and further showcased her ability to blend Afro-fusion, R&B, and highlife with effortless grace.

These early projects cemented her as a unique voice in the Afrobeats and African soul space an artist with not just talent but a clear sense of purpose and depth.

Gyakie’s influence now extends far beyond music. At the 2025 Forbes Summit she was invited as a featured speaker where she shared insights on her sonic evolution and the genre-blending direction of her upcoming work. With musical influences ranging from hip-hop to highlife, Gyakie continues to redefine the boundaries of African music and push the global conversation forward.

As fans and critics alike await the full release of After Midnight, one thing is certain: Gyakie is not just singing songs she’s telling stories, healing wounds and carving out a legacy that resonates across borders and generations.

With Sankofa as the heartfelt prelude, Gyakie invites us into her most intimate and creative space where truth is unveiled, emotions are raw, and music becomes a midnight prayer.
