GRNMA Assures Nurses Are Not Affected by Chief of Staff’s Directive.
The Assistant Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Philemon Agyapong, has assured the public that no nurse has been affected by the Chief of Staff’s directive annulling all public sector appointments made after December 7, 2024.
Speaking on JoyNews on Monday, February 24, 2025, Agyapong confirmed that although the directive initially caused concern among nurses, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandah, has clarified the situation, ensuring that no nurse will lose their job.
“No nurse has gone home as we speak,” Agyapong emphasized, assuring that nurses who followed the appropriate processes and obtained financial clearance remain at post.
The GRNMA engaged with the Health Minister shortly after the directive was issued. Following their discussions, the Minister confirmed that nurses who had received financial clearance would not be affected by the cancellation of public sector appointments.
This assurance follows concerns raised by the GRNMA, which urged the government to exclude newly recruited nurses from the directive. The association also warned of potential industrial action if any of their members were asked to leave their positions.
The GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, stressed that newly recruited nurses and midwives are a vital part of Ghana’s healthcare system and must remain at post to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery.
Agyapong further revealed that in June 2024, the previous administration granted financial clearance for 15,200 nurses to be posted within the health sector. These postings occurred between August 2024 and December 31, 2024.
“What I’m aware of is that the former administration gave financial clearance to 15,200 nurses, and we are expecting 15,200 nurses to be posted within that period,” he explained.
He reaffirmed that these nurses are already working across various health facilities and should not be affected by the directive.
The GRNMA remains committed to protecting the rights of its members and ensuring that nurses and midwives who have legally secured their appointments through the appropriate channels are not unfairly dismissed.
As of now, all newly recruited nurses who received financial clearance are still at their posts, and the association continues to monitor the situation closely to prevent any disruption to Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.
