GPRTU and Transport Unions Enforce 15% Fare Reduction, Warn Drivers of Sanctions
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in collaboration with other commercial transport associations, has officially directed all commercial drivers across the country to comply with a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective immediately.
In a joint press release issued on Sunday, May 25, 2025, the leadership of the GPRTU, Concerned Drivers Association, and True Drivers Union emphasized that any driver who fails to implement the new fare structure will face strict sanctions. The unions warned that defiance of the directive will not be tolerated as it undermines recent agreements made with stakeholders.
We urge all drivers to adhere to the fare reduction to avoid any disciplinary action the statement read.
The fare reduction comes after recent fuel price cuts and thorough consultations between transport unions and relevant government bodies. The unions noted that the decision is aimed at easing the financial burden on passengers in light of the improved fuel pricing environment.
To ensure compliance, the unions are calling on the general public to report any drivers who continue to charge old fares. Passengers can lodge complaints at the nearest transport union offices or report directly to the police.
The leadership reassured Ghanaians that they are committed to fairness and accountability in the transport sector. They also expressed confidence that this move will foster better relations between transport operators and the commuting public.
The implementation of the 15% fare reduction is expected to provide some relief for daily commuters and reflects the transport sector’s responsiveness to current economic conditions. Ghanaians are encouraged to remain vigilant and help ensure the new fares are respected nationwide.
