Ghanaian Disc Jockey DJ Awana Passes Away at 37 Military Hospital

 

Samuel Tei Mensah Nartey, better known as DJ Awana, a well-loved Ghanaian disc jockey and a staff member of the Multimedia Group has passed away. He died in the early hours of Sunday morning at the 37 Military Hospital after a period of battling an undisclosed illness.

DJ Awana was an iconic presence in the Ghanaian entertainment industry, particularly known for his work as a presenter on Adom FM and Hitz FM. His distinctive style of presentation, along with his signature catchphrase 3y3 Awana nie oo, made him a beloved figure among listeners across the country.

His sudden death has shocked the media industry with many colleagues and friends taking to social media to pay tribute to the late DJ. Among those expressing grief is Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, popularly known as Abeiku Santana, Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, who recalled his personal connection with DJ Awana. Abeiku Santana shared that he first worked with DJ Awana when he joined Multimedia in 2001, during a time of reengineering at Adom FM. Abeiku fondly remembered how DJ Awana was dedicated and hardworking from the very start.

Abeiku Santana expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news of DJ Awana’s passing, stating, I was very sad when I heard the news, and I couldn’t control myself. God should take care of his soul.” He further reminded everyone of the fleeting nature of life and urged them to live by the teachings of God.

Media personalities such as Abigail Ashley of UTV and Isaac Owusu-Ansah (OPD) have also shared their condolences, reflecting on DJ Awana’s immense contributions to the Ghanaian media landscape. His unique style of mixing gospel music during his time on Adom FM and later at Oman FM endeared him to many fans, and he remained a significant figure in the industry.

DJ Awana’s career began in 2003 at Adom FM in Tema, where he quickly made a name for himself with his captivating DJ skills and on-air presence. In 2007, he made a surprising move to Oman FM, where he continued to entertain his loyal followers with his Sunday morning gospel mixes. After three years, he returned to the Multimedia Group, where he continued to make an impact in the radio and DJ scene.

Though the cause of his death has yet to be officially confirmed by his family, his passing has left a void in the Ghanaian entertainment industry. The Ghana DJ Awards, which DJ Awana was closely affiliated with, is expected to release a statement in honor of his legacy.

DJ Awana will always be remembered for his contributions to Ghanaian radio and his unique style that touched the lives of many. His family, friends and fans continue to mourn the loss of a true media legend.
