GFA Probes Acheampong Over Ethics Breach Petition

The Ethics Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially invited sports journalist Mensah Daniel Listowel to appear before the committee regarding a petition he submitted against GFA Executive Council Member Frederick Acheampong.

The petition which was also forwarded to FIFA accuses Frederick Acheampong of breaching Article 15(1) of the FIFA Code of Ethics. This article prohibits any individual involved in football from engaging in conduct that offends the dignity or integrity of others particularly through discriminatory or derogatory remarks based on race, nationality, religion, gender, political opinion or other factors.

Listowel’s petition stems from Acheampong’s decision to contest the 2024 general elections as a parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He argues that Acheampong’s political involvement may have violated FIFA’s ethical standards, particularly the requirement for neutrality in football governance.

In response to the petition, the GFA has scheduled a meeting with Listowel to gain further clarity and evidence to support the ongoing investigation.

The Ethics Committee is currently reviewing a petition you submitted regarding an alleged breach of Article 15(1) of the FIFA Code of Ethics by Executive Council Member Frederick Acheampong. You are hereby invited to appear before the Committee on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 2:00 pm, at the GFA Secretariat, Accra, to assist with investigations,” the GFA’s official statement read.

Although Frederick Acheampong contested the 2024 elections, he did not win the parliamentary seat. However, the Ethics Committee aims to determine whether his actions, during the period he held a position at the GFA while actively engaging in partisan politics, breached any ethical guidelines.

The case has attracted public attention as it touches on the intersection between politics and sports administration in Ghana. Many stakeholders are closely monitoring the proceedings hoping for transparency and fairness in the outcome.

Mensah Daniel Listowel is expected to provide detailed evidence and justification for his claims when he appears before the committee. The final decision of the Ethics Committee will determine whether further actions or sanctions will be taken against Frederick Acheampong.
