GFA President Kurt Okraku Commits $100,000 to Revive Colts Football in Ghana
President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has announced a significant $100,000 investment into Colts football as part of a renewed push to rejuvenate grassroots football development across the country.
The announcement was made during the official unveiling of new vehicles for the various Regional Football Associations (RFAs) a move aimed at boosting operational efficiency at the regional level. Speaking at the event Okraku emphasized the importance of strengthening youth football structures and reaffirmed the GFA’s dedication to developing football from the grassroots.
We’ve decided to invest $100,000 in Colts football to supply footballs and provide essential support. Another $100,000 will go to the second, third, and women’s leagues, he stated.
In addition to the Colts initiative, the GFA president announced another $100,000 allocation to clubs in the Division Two and Division Three leagues, as well as teams competing in the Women’s League. These funds are expected to ease financial pressures on clubs and promote inclusive growth in Ghana’s football ecosystem.
This development aligns with the objectives of the FIFA Forward Program — a global initiative that provides targeted funding and infrastructure support to member associations, with a focus on sustainability, accountability, and grassroots empowerment.
The decision to invest in Colts football comes at a critical time, as the GFA faces growing calls to do more for grassroots development. Over the years, the Colts system has been a crucial pathway for unearthing and nurturing young talents in Ghana, with many national and international stars starting their careers at this level.
However, limited resources, inadequate infrastructure and minimal administrative support have plagued the system, causing many to worry about its decline.
With this renewed funding commitment, the GFA aims to breathe new life into the Colts football structure and rebuild it as a solid foundation for future stars to emerge.
Kurt Okraku’s announcement is part of a broader vision to decentralize football development, strengthen regional football bodies and ensure that every young Ghanaian who dreams of playing football has access to the right environment and tools.
Stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the funds will be properly utilized and monitored to yield tangible results.
If implemented effectively, this investment could mark the beginning of a new era for youth football in Ghana—one that brings back the glory days of Colts football and reignites the passion for the game in communities across the nation.
