Former MP Gifty Klenam Seeks Answers Over Dismissal, Joins NDC.

Former Lower West Akim Member of Parliament (MP) and ex-Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Gifty Klenam, has expressed confusion over her dismissal from office, stating that she remains unaware of the reasons behind the decision.

Speaking in an interview with Joy Prime, Klenam disclosed that she has never been given an explanation for her removal and has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to clarify the circumstances surrounding her dismissal.

“I would be very happy if you can find out from President Akufo-Addo why he sacked me. Honestly, I don’t know up to today why he did what he did,” she revealed.

Despite her removal, Klenam remains proud of her contributions to Ghana’s export sector, particularly in the areas of product development and agricultural growth. She emphasized that effective exportation requires more than simply sending goods abroad—it involves strategic development, which in turn creates jobs and boosts the economy.

She highlighted her efforts in reviving pineapple exports, promoting cashew farming, and improving agricultural productivity in Ghana. Among her achievements at GEPA, Klenam spearheaded initiatives such as:
• Revitalizing the smooth cayenne pineapple variety, which had nearly disappeared from the market.
• Distributing thousands of cashew seedlings to farmers to enhance production.
• Supporting yam production in the Volta Region to increase yields.

According to Klenam, these efforts played a crucial role in positioning Ghana’s agricultural exports for greater success in international markets.

Despite her track record, Klenam suspects that political motives played a role in her removal from office. However, instead of dwelling on the past, she has chosen to move forward and recently announced her switch to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Her defection has sparked discussions within political circles, with some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members reportedly reaching out to congratulate her on her decision. However, Klenam acknowledged that politics comes with challenges, including threats and opposition, which she has learned to navigate carefully.

“Politics is tough, and sometimes you have to be cautious. But I am at peace with my decision,” she stated.

With her move to the NDC, Klenam is expected to play an active role in the party’s activities ahead of the 2024 general elections. While her next political steps remain uncertain, her experience in policy-making, business development, and agricultural exportation could make her a valuable asset to her new party.

Her transition from the NPP to the NDC marks a significant shift in her political journey, and many will be watching closely to see what role she plays in Ghana’s political landscape moving forward.
