Five New Hospitals Commissioned in Eastern Region to Boost Healthcare Delivery

In a major boost to healthcare access in the Eastern Region, five newly constructed municipal and district hospitals have officially been handed over for immediate operational use. The beneficiary areas are Okere, Nkwatia, Achiase, New Juaben North, and Atiwa West.

The official handing-over ceremony took place on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Okere, where the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Awatey, received the symbolic keys to the hospitals. The event marked the commencement of operations at the facilities, which are expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery in their respective districts.

These hospitals are equipped with modern medical equipment and advanced healthcare facilities to ensure quality healthcare services. Residents in these areas will now have access to emergency care, maternal and child health services, outpatient care, and other essential medical services without needing to travel long distances to regional or national hospitals.

Mrs. Awatey emphasized that these hospitals represent a critical investment in the health and well-being of the people. She commended the Ministry of Health, the local Assemblies, and development partners for their commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure.

“The construction of these hospitals is a testament to the power of collaboration and partnership. I urge the communities and health workers to take ownership of these facilities and ensure their proper maintenance,” she stated.

A speech delivered on behalf of the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to expanding and strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system. He assured the public that the government is working tirelessly to ensure that every citizen, regardless of their location or socio-economic status, has access to quality healthcare.

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, urged healthcare workers to uphold high standards and prioritize patient care. He encouraged both workers and community members to take care of the facilities, emphasizing that the hospitals belong to the people and should be preserved for future generations.

Traditional leaders present at the ceremony also emphasized the importance of quality service delivery and patient care. The Chief of Adukrom and Nifahene of the Akuapem Traditional Area, Osuodumgya Otutu Ababio V, urged health workers who will be posted to these hospitals to exercise patience, show empathy, and always prioritize the well-being of patients.

With the commissioning of these hospitals, residents of Okere, Nkwatia, Achiase, New Juaben North, and Atiwa West can now access quality healthcare services closer to home. The new facilities are expected to reduce patient congestion at larger hospitals and improve overall healthcare outcomes in the region.

The government, stakeholders, and community members have been urged to work together to ensure the sustainability of these hospitals, making them centers of hope and excellent healthcare service delivery.
