Fear and Uncertainty Grip Osino Residents as Illegal Miners Dig Close to Homes

Osino a town in the Fantseakwa South  District in the Eastern  Region of Ghana is facing a growing crisis as illegal miners commonly known as galamsey operators have moved their activities dangerously close to residential areas. Concerned residents are raising alarms over the safety risks and environmental damage caused by the uncontrolled mining activities right in the heart of the town.

The illegal miners have excavated large pits near houses leaving behind loose soil and unstable ground. This has sparked fears among locals about potential disasters such as sinkholes building collapses and water contamination. Many residents question how these mining activities are being carried out so openly without intervention from the authorities.

The ongoing mining has left homes vulnerable to structural damage due to land instability. The extensive digging could weaken the ground increasing the likelihood of cave-ins or sudden collapses that may endanger lives and property. Additionally  the use of harmful chemicals in mining such as mercury and cyanide raises serious concerns about water pollution which could affect drinking water sources for the community.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed deep frustration:

We wake up every day to see them digging right next to our homes. The ground is unstable and we are scared our houses might collapse. Where are the authorities? Why is no one stopping this?

Despite the growing dangers residents claim that little has been done to stop the illegal miners. Some believe that local officials may be turning a blind eye or failing to enforce laws against galamsey operations. The community is calling on the government law enforcement agencies and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to intervene before a disaster strikes.

In recent years the government has intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal mining but the situation in Osino raises questions about enforcement at the local level. If immediate action is not taken the town could face irreversible damage both to its environment and the safety of its people.

Residents continue to live in fear as the mining activities show no signs of stopping. They are urging authorities to act swiftly before lives and properties are lost due to the unchecked operations of galamsey miners in the heart of their community.
