Dele Odule Sparks Debate Over “Sex for Roles” in Nollywood: Says It’s Normal If Not Forced
Veteran Yoruba actor Dele Odule has stirred controversy with his recent remarks on the sensitive issue of “sex for roles” in the Nigerian movie industry. In an interview shared on the official YouTube channel of Oyinmomo TV, the respected Nollywood icon shared his views on the growing conversation about actors allegedly demanding romantic or sexual relationships from actresses in exchange for movie roles.
While condemning coercion, Odule surprisingly stated that there is nothing wrong if an actor wants to have a romantic or sexual relationship with an actress before offering her a role as long as it is not forced and is based on mutual consent.
“I don’t agree that actors can ask actresses to have an affair with them before giving them movie roles because if such happens, it means the actress already has an interest in doing it,” Odule explained.
“In a society where there are men and women, it is normal that they will approach each other for relationships, but it has to come with mutual agreement between a man and a woman because a woman always has the choice to agree or disagree. Nothing wrong if an actor wants sex from an actress for movie roles so far he doesn’t force her. It only becomes illegal when force is applied, which is punishable under law.”
His comments have generated mixed reactions across social media and the Nollywood community. While some agree with his stance on mutual consent, many others believe his comments normalize unethical practices in the film industry, where power dynamics often place aspiring actresses in vulnerable situations.
Critics argue that even without physical force, the mere suggestion of a role being tied to a sexual favor can amount to manipulation or professional exploitation. Others feel Odule’s remarks highlight a deep-rooted issue that needs to be addressed with more sensitivity and accountability.
Dele Odule, known for his decades-long career in the Yoruba movie sector, has earned respect as a seasoned actor and filmmaker. However, this recent statement has opened up a wider conversation about ethics, professionalism, and abuse of power in Nollywood.
As the industry continues to grow and evolve, calls for stricter structures, transparent casting processes, and support systems for young talents — especially women have intensified. This latest debate may well be a catalyst for renewed efforts to ensure safer and fairer practices in Nollywood.
