Black Stars Climb in FIFA Rankings Following Strong Start to 2025

Ghana’s senior men’s national football team the Black Stars have made an encouraging upward movement in the latest FIFA rankings marking their first improvement since July 2024. The team now occupies the 76th spot globally moving up from 77th where they had remained since November 2024. This improvement is seen as a positive development for the team as they aim to regain their competitive edge on the world stage.

The Black Stars’ upward shift in the FIFA rankings comes on the back of a strong start to the 2025 international calendar. Ghana secured back-to-back victories in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers defeating Chad and Madagascar. These wins marked Ghana’s first victories since their triumph over the Central African Republic in June 2024, signaling a much-needed resurgence for the national team.

The victories over Chad and Madagascar boosted Ghana’s position ahead of Israel, who dropped two places in the rankings. These results have provided a morale boost for the Black Stars and have reignited hope among fans that the team can continue to improve in both global and continental competitions.

While Ghana has moved up globally their ranking in Africa remains unchanged at 14th on the continent. This position reflects the competitive nature of African football, with several strong teams vying for higher placements. Despite this, head coach Otto Addo and his squad will be looking to build on their recent successes and push for an improvement in their continental ranking as well.

With more crucial fixtures scheduled later in the year, including additional World Cup qualifiers, Ghana will be focused on furthering their progress. A successful campaign in these upcoming matches could see them break into the top 10 in Africa and continue climbing in the global standings.

The latest FIFA rankings also saw Argentina solidify their place at the top after their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and a dominant 4-1 win over Brazil. Spain moved up to second place overtaking France while Portugal dropped below the Netherlands. Germany closed the gap on Italy following back-to-back victories, signaling a renewed competitive spirit in European football.

In North America, Mexico’s triumph in the Nations League lifted them to 17th, just behind the USA, while Canada climbed to their highest-ever position at 30th. Meanwhile, Myanmar recorded the biggest jump in the rankings, moving up seven places to 162nd.

With the qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup still ongoing the Black Stars will be eager to maintain their momentum and continue their push for a higher global ranking. Ghana’s positive start to 2025 has set a solid foundation for the months ahead, and with more World Cup qualifiers and friendly matches on the horizon the Black Stars will be keen to further improve their standing.

Ghana’s rising position in the FIFA rankings is a testament to the team’s hard work and determination, and with head coach Otto Addo at the helm, the Black Stars will aim to regain their prominence in world football. Fans will be hopeful that the team can carry forward their recent success and make a strong push for qualification to the 2026 World Cup, while continuing to climb the global rankings.
