Benjamin Tsivanyo Bids Farewell to Ghana Premier League After Tragic Incident
Rising football star Benjamin Tsivanyo has announced his decision to step away from the Ghana Premier League citing emotional distress following the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley.
The 16-year-old forward who was instrumental in Nsoatreman FC’s MTN FA Cup triumph last season revealed in an interview with Joy Sports that he no longer has the motivation to continue his professional career in Ghana’s top-flight league. His decision comes in the wake of Nsoatreman FC’s withdrawal from the Ghana Premier League—a move that followed the tragic events surrounding their recent fixture against Asante Kotoko.
Some of us are worried; we have been talking a lot. I am in the house now, and no one is going to tell you how they really feel, Tsivanyo said reflecting on the impact the incident has had on him and his teammates.
While Tsivanyo continues to maintain his fitness by training with his former club and a second-division team near the beachside, his eyes are firmly set on opportunities abroad.
As a young footballer sometimes, you have to let go of the past. You always have to be prepared, he said. For me I don’t want to stay in Ghana anymore. I’ve already made a name for myself here, so the next step is to move abroad and prove myself.
Tsivanyo’s exit from the local scene is a major blow to Ghanaian football, especially as he had been touted as one of the brightest young talents to watch. His departure highlights growing concerns among young players about safety, support, and career prospects within the domestic football system.
Many fans and analysts have sympathized with the young player’s decision, calling it a wake-up call for stakeholders to address the challenges in Ghana’s football environment—ranging from security to career development.
As he looks toward a future beyond Ghana’s borders Tsivanyo carries with him not just the hopes of a community but also the pain of a footballing nation still reeling from recent events.
