Auditor-General to Present Interim Report on Contractor Claims as Government Begins Payment Process

The Auditor-General is expected to release an interim audit report on outstanding contractor claims in the coming days, marking a key step in the government’s plan to begin settling long standing arrears.

This development was announced following a high level meeting between Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Group Chief Executive Officer of Ecobank, Mr. Jeremy Awori.

According to Dr. Forson, the current administration inherited a total of GH¢67 billion in contractor arrears. In response the government has pledged to verify and clear these debts over a four year period. As part of this commitment, GH¢13 billion has already been allocated in the 2025 national budget for the payment of verified claims.

Dr. Forson also emphasized the government’s determination to prevent the accumulation of new arrears. He highlighted recent amendments made to the Public Financial Management Act which are designed to promote discipline and transparency in public procurement and contract management. These reforms, he said, are critical to maintaining fiscal responsibility and improving trust in public institutions.

As Ghana works toward economic recovery Dr. Forson called on Ecobank the country’s largest financial institution, to play a stronger role in supporting key sectors of the economy. He specifically urged the bank to expand its support for private sector development and agriculture, which are seen as essential for job creation and economic growth.

In response Ecobank Group CEO Jeremy Awori reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to Ghana’s recovery agenda. He expressed readiness to increase lending, strengthen partnerships with the government, and contribute meaningfully to national development goals.

The meeting also saw the participation of John Abdulai Jinapor the Minister for Energy and Green Transition who underscored the importance of financial collaboration in achieving Ghana’s green energy targets.

With the imminent release of the Auditor General’s report the government is expected to begin settling contractor claims providing much needed relief to businesses and boosting confidence in the economy.
