Asantehene Honours Dr. Wiafe Addai for Women’s Health Advocacy
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has praised renowned breast cancer advocate Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai for her unwavering commitment to improving women’s health in Ghana and beyond. Describing her as a “Jewel in the Crown,” the King expressed admiration for Dr. Wiafe Addai’s tireless efforts in breast cancer awareness and healthcare development.
The commendation came during a visit to the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Friday, May 30, 2025, where Dr. Wiafe Addai led a high-profile delegation to update the King on the progress of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Cancer Centre of Excellence a state-of-the-art medical facility under construction at Kwaso in the Ejisu municipality.
In his remarks, the Asantehene acknowledged Dr. Wiafe Addai’s years of work in promoting breast cancer education a disease that continues to claim the lives of women across the world.
My granddaughter has shown a high level of resilience and determination to ensure women are not only free from breast cancer but that their general healthcare is improved, Otumfuo said.
He further praised her establishment of the Peace and Love Hospitals in Kumasi and Accra which serve as leading centres for cancer treatment and women’s health advocacy in Ghana.
The Asantehene also reaffirmed his full support for the completion of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Cancer Centre of Excellence which is named in his honour.
I am pledging my support in any possible way to enable the work done. Naming it after me is an honour but I need to see it completed, he stated.
The visit to the Manhyia Palace included a delegation of notable figures including Prof. Stephen Avery of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Opoku Adusei former President of the Ghana Medical Association, Prof. Christian Agyare Provost of the College of Health Sciences at KNUST, and traditional leaders. The group was led by Otumfuo Hiahene Oheneba Prof. Boachie-Adjei Woahene II.
Dr. Wiafe Addai expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Asantehene for his continued support emphasizing that collaboration is key to combating cancer in Ghana and across Africa.
With the support of the Asantehene and the collaboration of our local and international partners, we can truly make a difference in the lives of many women, she stated.
The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Cancer Centre of Excellence is being built on a 52-acre land at Kwaso in the Ejisu municipality. The $100 million project is being spearheaded by Breast Care International (BCI), Peace and Love Hospitals, Global Health Catalyst and the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.
The facility is expected to become a leading cancer treatment, research and education hub in Africa once completed over a five-year development timeline.
