Abura Dunkwa traders appeal to President Mahama for a modern market

Traders at Abura Dunkwa are urging President John Dramani Mahama and the government to build a modern market for the community saying the current facilities are inadequate for a district capital.

According to traders who spoke to mrwoode.com, Abura Dunkwa seat of the Abura Asebu Kwamankese (AAK) District does not have a permanent well‑planned market space. They noted that the existing market originally constructed during Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s era in the 1960s, is now too old and far too small for today’s trading activities.

Community leaders, the traders said have already released a larger parcel of land to government for a new market complex but construction has not begun. In the meantime many traders put up containers and temporary structures on the released land to keep their businesses running.

Some traders further alleged that the former Member of Parliament for AAK, Elvis Morris Donkor directed that those temporary structures be removed with the assurance that a modern market would soon be constructed. They claim that to date no such work has started. They also indicated that the land they are currently using for trading belongs to a private individual who has asked them to vacate it for development.

With the new administration now in office for more than six months traders say they are anxious to see visible progress on the market project.

When mrwoode.com contacted the District Chief Executive, Hon. Daniel Mensah Wardy, he stated that government plans to construct modern markets nationwide to support the 24‑hour economy policy and that Abura Dunkwa is included. He added that funding for the Abura Dunkwa Modern Market is available and that construction will commence soon.

Traders are hopeful that the project will start without further delay, bringing order, safety and growth to commercial life in Abura Dunkwa.
