Abura Abaka Market Traders Demand Reopening of Locked Toilets
Abura Abaka, Central Region — August 15, 2025
Traders at the Abura Abaka Market say the market’s toilet and urinal facilities have been locked for a long period forcing many to use nearby bushes during trading hours. They are calling on authorities to intervene immediately.
Abura Abaka Market is one of the largest markets in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District and a key source of revenue for the assembly. It serves not only residents of Abura Abaka but also more than 10 surrounding communities including Edumfa, Odumekyir, Egyirkrom, Tuakwa, Ahinfie, Obohen, Odumasi, Oboka and others.
Speaking to mrwoode.com traders said they are compelled to ease themselves in the bush because the market washrooms remain locked.
They added that on every market day—Monday and Thursday—revenue collectors from the assembly visit to collect taxes. According to the traders they also used to pay per use for the toilet facilities when they were open yet the washrooms have still not been made available.
Traders warned that the situation poses serious health risks including the spread of sanitation-related diseases. They expressed worry that pupils and teachers of Odumekyir A.M.E. Zion School located directly opposite the market could be affected if the current practice continues.
When contacted by the mrwoode.com team, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Daniel Wardy said the facility would be opened very soon so that traders can use it. He did not provide a specific date.
Stakeholders are Urging
• Immediate reopening of the market’s toilet and urinal facilities.
• A clear schedule for cleaning, maintenance, and supervision.
• Provision of temporary mobile toilets if reopening is delayed.
• Ongoing public health education for traders and shoppers.
Traders say restoring access to safe sanitation will protect public health uphold dignity and support smooth market operations in one of the district’s most important commercial centers.
