Kofi Ofosu Nkansah and Kofi Tonto Call for NPP Appointees to Step Down
Accra, February 7, 2025 – The issue of political transitions in government institutions has sparked heated debates, with former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, and NPP communications team member, Kofi Tonto, calling for all New Patriotic Party (NPP) appointees to vacate their positions following the change in government.
In a Facebook post, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah openly supported actions by NDC foot soldiers to chase out NPP appointees who are refusing to leave office. He argued that had NDC appointees refused to step down in 2017, the NPP wouldn’t have had the opportunity to serve.
“I support NDC foot soldiers chasing out any NPP appointee who is refusing to leave office. If NDC appointees had not left, would we have gotten opportunities to also serve? Even in the same government, the President can appoint you today and remove you tomorrow, so what’s the point in resisting the President’s directive?” he wrote.
His comments have generated discussions, with some agreeing that appointees must respect the new administration’s decisions, while others argue that due process should be followed in transitioning leadership positions.
Adding to the debate, NPP communications team member Kofi Tonto also urged NPP-appointed CEOs who are yet to resign to step down immediately. He emphasized that it is unreasonable for such individuals to oppose the policies of President John Dramani Mahama while still expecting to retain their positions.
“You cannot campaign against the vision and ideas of Mahama and expect to be maintained as a CEO. Step down for those who believe in his ideas and vision. It’s that simple!” he wrote on Facebook.
Meanwhile, the issue of political appointees leaving office has taken a legal turn, as the former Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company Limited, Ms. Hollistar Duah-Yentumi, has gone to court demanding a full salary and benefits for the remainder of her contract.
Ms. Duah-Yentumi refused to hand over her position after she was dismissed by President John Mahama, who replaced her with James Agyenim-Boateng as the new MD of SIC Insurance. She is now seeking compensation for her unexpired term in office, raising questions about due process in political appointments and dismissals.
The ongoing discussions highlight the challenges of political transitions in Ghana, with appointees sometimes resisting removal while political activists push for immediate change. While some believe that government appointments should change with each administration, others argue that professionalism and institutional stability should take precedence over political affiliations.
As tensions rise, it remains to be seen how the government will handle the issue of transitioning CEOs and other appointees while maintaining law and order.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
