Ghana Education Service Approves Procurement of Food Items to Improve Feeding in Public SHSs.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken decisive steps to address the feeding situation in public senior high schools (SHSs) across the country. According to a letter dated January 22, 2025, signed by Stephen Kwaku Owusu, Deputy Director-General (MS), heads of public SHSs have been granted approval to procure essential food items to feed students for two weeks, from January 20 to February 3, 2025.
This measure, initiated by the Office of the President, is aimed at improving the feeding situation in various public Second Cycle Institutions across Ghana.
The GES has outlined specific disbursement rates for feeding students based on their enrollment. Boarding students have been allocated an approved daily feeding rate of GH¢7.50, while day students are allocated GH¢3.00. The funds have been released to the schools with clear instructions to ensure that they are used efficiently for the intended purpose.
According to the letter, each school is expected to procure essential food items available in their localities to sustain feeding for the two-week period. Additionally, heads of purely day schools are required to engage the services of private caterers to provide hot meals for their students at the approved rates.
The GES emphasized that this initiative is an interim measure to ensure that students in public SHSs and STEM schools are well-fed. regional directors have been tasked with ensuring compliance
