Health Concerns Rise as Mallam Residents Turn Prophet Kumchacha’s Church Backlot into a Dump
Residents of Mallam in the Weija Gbawe Constituency are alarmed by the worsening sanitary conditions caused by open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse behind the Heaven’s Gate Ministries church, led by renowned pastor Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha. The health risks posed by these activities are also impacting Princess International School, located directly opposite the church, where pupils are exposed to the unhygienic environment.
When questioned about the issue by mrwoode.com, Mr. Derick Kusi Nyametiase, the Assembly Member for the area, revealed the measures he has taken to address the problem. He stated that workers were hired to clear the refuse and weed the area to improve sanitation. Furthermore, he collaborated with the Electricity Company of Ghana to provide electricity and install streetlights in the vicinity, aiming to discourage residents from using the area for open defecation or refuse dumping. Despite these efforts, the problem persists, as some individuals continue to engage in these activities.
Prophet Kumchacha, founder of the Heaven’s Gate Ministries, also shared his perspective on the issue. He explained that he had previously hired someone to manage and maintain the area. However, the individual recently traveled, leaving the site unattended, which contributed to the recurrence of the problem.
To permanently address the situation, Prophet Kumchacha announced plans to transform the area behind the church. His initiative includes planting flowers and green grass to beautify the space, while employing security personnel to ensure that the site remains clean and is no longer misused. Prophet Kumchacha emphasized his commitment to creating a healthier and safer environment for the community and the nearby school.
The situation has sparked discussions among residents and stakeholders, urging a collective approach to solving the issue. Health experts warn that open defecation and improper waste disposal can lead to the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and other hygiene-related infections.
To curb these challenges, residents are being called upon to collaborate with local authorities to promote proper sanitation practices. Additionally, the Assembly Member and Prophet Kumchacha are being encouraged to take further steps, including public education campaigns and stricter enforcement of environmental regulations, to ensure the area remains clean and safe.
As the community awaits the implementation of Prophet Kumchacha’s proposed beautification project, there is hope that the efforts of local leaders and community members will result in a long-term solution to this pressing issue.
