The Alarming Lack of Road Markings on Ghana’s Highways: A Growing Safety Concern.

 

Road markings, also known as pavement markings, are vital components of road safety worldwide. They play a significant role in guiding drivers, ensuring the smooth flow of traffic, and preventing accidents. These markings communicate the intended travel path for short-range operations and the roadway alignment for long-range navigation. However, in Ghana, particularly in Accra, the absence of adequate road markings on many highways has become a pressing concern that puts the lives of road users at risk.

Road markings provide essential visual cues that help drivers stay within their lanes, navigate intersections, and maintain safe distances from other vehicles. They are especially crucial at night and during adverse weather conditions when visibility is reduced. Between January and June 2024 alone, approximately 1,237 people lost their lives in road crashes. A significant number of these accidents could be attributed to poor road infrastructure, including the absence of proper markings.

The lack of road markings is not just a safety issue; it also has economic and social implications. Road accidents lead to loss of life, injuries, and property damage, placing a financial burden on families and the nation. The ripple effect includes increased healthcare costs, loss of productivity, and emotional trauma for victims and their families.

Addressing this issue requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including the government, road safety authorities, and the public. Here are some recommendations:
1. Prioritize Road Markings: The government and local authorities must allocate resources to ensure all highways and major roads are properly marked.
2. Regular Maintenance: Road markings fade over time due to wear and tear. Regular maintenance schedules should be implemented to ensure visibility.
3. Public Awareness: Road users must be educated on the importance of road markings and how to adhere to them for safety.
4. Enforce Standards: Contractors responsible for road construction should be held accountable for ensuring proper road markings are included in their projects.
