Prof. Nana Ama Klutse Appointed CEO of Ghana’s EPA to Lead Climate Action.

In a significant development for Ghana’s environmental sector, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by President John Dramani Mahama. This appointment brings a wealth of expertise to the agency, as Prof. Klutse is a distinguished climate scientist with over two decades of experience in climate change research.

Prof. Klutse’s academic journey began at Anomabo Methodist Primary and Junior High School, followed by Mfantsiman Girls Secondary School. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of Cape Coast and later pursued a PhD in Climatology at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

Her professional career includes significant roles such as a Senior Research Scientist at the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, where she managed the Remote Sensing and Climate Center. She also served as a guest lecturer at the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) in Akure, Nigeria.

In July 2023, Prof. Klutse achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Ghanaian elected as a Vice-Chair of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This role underscores her commitment to addressing climate change on both national and international platforms. 

Prior to her appointment at the EPA, Prof. Klutse was the Head of the Department of Physics at the University of Ghana, where she was recognized as the first female full professor in the department.

The Environmental Protection Agency, established by the EPA Act 490 in 1994, is dedicated to improving, conserving, and promoting Ghana’s environment. With Prof. Klutse at the helm, the agency is poised to enhance its efforts in environmental sustainability and resource management.

Prof. Klutse’s appointment is expected to bring a renewed focus on climate change mitigation and environmental protection in Ghana, leveraging her extensive experience and leadership in the field.
