Speaker Bagbin Urges New MPs to Prioritize Ghana Over Partisan Politics.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to put the nation’s interests above party politics as they begin their parliamentary duties.
Speaking at an orientation session in Accra on Saturday, January 11, 2025, the Speaker emphasized the importance of addressing Ghana’s pressing challenges with dedication and a nation-first mindset.
“I urge you to stay focused and work diligently to address the challenges facing our nation. The priority is the nation, not the [political] party. It is very critical, and for those who may not be observant, please refocus,” Bagbin advised.
A Call for Unity and Selflessness
The Speaker highlighted the need for MPs to work collectively in advancing Ghana’s development agenda, urging them to adopt a bipartisan approach in deliberations and decision-making. According to him, prioritizing Ghana’s welfare would not only benefit the nation but also serve as a foundation for the MPs’ long-term political success.
“Those who truly put Ghana first advance further in politics than those who are overly partisan,” he remarked. “When you are extremely partisan, you may rise within a regime, but in the next one, you may collapse because you are seen as tied to one leader. Once that leader is no longer relevant, you may also lose relevance.”
Bagbin also reminded the new MPs of their responsibility to represent their constituents effectively by addressing critical issues such as unemployment, infrastructure development, and economic challenges. He called on them to focus on delivering tangible results that would improve the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
“Your constituents elected you to represent their interests, not to deepen political divisions. It is your responsibility to ensure that their voices are heard, and their needs are met,” Bagbin stated.
Public Reaction
The Speaker’s call has been met with widespread approval, with many Ghanaians praising his emphasis on unity and national interest. However, some have expressed skepticism about whether MPs will truly embrace a non-partisan approach, given Ghana’s deeply polarized political landscape.
Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin’s message to the newly elected MPs is a timely reminder of the need for selfless leadership and unity in tackling Ghana’s challenges. As the MPs settle into their roles, the nation will be watching closely to see whether they will heed the Speaker’s call and prioritize Ghana’s welfare above party lines.
This bold plea from the Speaker reinforces the importance of putting the nation first in building a prosperous and united Ghana.
