COCOBOD CEO Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Cocoa Industry in Meeting with Barry Callebaut Boss
The Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Dr. Ransford Abbey has reaffirmed the Board’s unwavering commitment to building a sustainable cocoa industry in Ghana. This assurance was given during a high-level meeting with Mr. Peter Feld the Global Chief Executive Officer of Barry Callebaut one of the world’s leading chocolate and cocoa product manufacturers.
In his remarks, Dr. Abbey stressed the importance of transparency strong collaboration with stakeholders and sustainable financing in ensuring the long-term viability of the cocoa sector. He further noted that protecting the nation’s interest in cocoa production remains a top priority.
Dr. Abbey also used the opportunity to highlight COCOBOD’s ongoing efforts to fight illegal mining popularly known as galamsey on cocoa farmlands. He explained that illegal mining not only destroys farmlands but also threatens the future of cocoa production in Ghana. We are working with various state agencies and local communities to combat this menace and protect our lands, he said.
On his part, Mr. Peter Feld commended COCOBOD for its consistent efforts to support cocoa farmers and safeguard Ghana’s position as a global cocoa giant. He emphasised the need to strengthen partnerships between public and private stakeholders to improve the livelihood of smallholder cocoa farmers.
Mr. Feld added that Barry Callebaut is committed to promoting sustainable cocoa farming practices and will continue to collaborate with COCOBOD in advancing environmental protection, farmer welfare and the preservation of cocoa farmlands.
The meeting marked a significant step in deepening cooperation between COCOBOD and Barry Callebaut with both parties reaffirming their dedication to a sustainable and thriving cocoa industry that benefits all players along the value chain.
Ghana remains the second-largest cocoa producer in the world, and such strategic engagements are seen as vital in safeguarding the future of one of the country’s most important economic sectors.
