Spio-Garbrah Credits President Mahama and NDC for Ghana’s Economic Turnaround

Former Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah has praised the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration led by President John Dramani Mahama, for what he describes as a major economic recovery marked by accountability, integrity, and strategic governance.

In a statement titled The Great NDC and Ghana under a Great President Make Ghana Shine Again, Spio-Garbrah pointed to recent economic progress highlighted by data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) as evidence of a remarkable turnaround under the Mahama-led administration.

He attributed these gains to what he called “honest and accountable leadership a departure from what he described as systemic corruption and financial mismanagement under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

The excellent results being announced by the BoG and in other areas of the economy are a testament to the President’s integrity and the professionalism of his appointees, Spio-Garbrah wrote.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah outlined several reasons for the improvement in Ghana’s economic landscape, including:
• The election of what he called a far more honest President” in December 2024;
• Swift nomination, vetting, and deployment of government appointees;
• A strong 120-day performance target for key sectors set by the President;
• Improved coordination between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana;
• The establishment of the GoldBod an institution given exclusive control over gold exports;
• Favorable global prices for Ghana’s key exports, including cocoa and gold;
• A notable reduction in corruption and financial misappropriation at institutions like COCOBOD and in the gold trade.

Spio-Garbrah emphasized that the absence of blatant theft by government officials, especially compared to what he alleged occurred under the NPP, has played a major role in restoring confidence and fiscal stability.

Praise for Leadership

In his message, Spio-Garbrah extended congratulations to all Ghanaians, but reserved special acknowledgment for:
• President John Dramani Mahama, for leading with discipline and vision;
• The Minister of Finance, for steering policy implementation;
• The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, for managing monetary policy effectively;
• The CEO of GoldBod, for helping optimize gold revenues.

“Less or no blatant stealing by GoG officials alone was responsible for the losses being declared under NPP at the COCOBOD and in the gold trade,” Spio-Garbrah stated.

The former Trade Minister’s comments are seen as both a strong endorsement of President Mahama’s administration and a pointed critique of the NPP’s tenure. His remarks have already stirred discussion within political and economic circles, as they touch on governance, fiscal discipline, and the politics of resource management in Ghana.

As the country continues to navigate its post-COVID recovery and global economic uncertainties, Spio-Garbrah’s statement adds to the growing narrative that Ghana’s path to stability may lie not just in market forces but in leadership choices, transparency, and institutional reforms.

In closing, Spio-Garbrah encouraged all Ghanaians to recognize and support efforts by the current government to rebuild the economy, stressing that national success depends on both leadership and citizen engagement.

His message, while political in tone, underscores the urgent need for sustainable governance and economic accountability in Ghana’s development journey.
