Chairman Wontumi’s Lawyer Speaks Out After Heavy Security Presence at His Residence

Kwame Appiah legal counsel for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has raised serious concerns about the security operation that took place at his client’s residence on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Speaking to the press after the incident Mr. Appiah described the heavy security presence as excessive and unnecessary. According to him more than 20 vehicles carrying heavily armed men stormed the premises in what appeared to be a move to arrest or search for Chairman Wontumi. The lawyer claimed the security officials were carrying various types of AK-47 rifles and acted in a manner he believes does not reflect democratic principles.

I met people here heavily armed so I contacted the head of the team. He told me they were asked to bring Chairman Wontumi to Accra, Mr. Appiah said. After much deliberation he received a call and said they would withdraw based on the assurances we gave. The agreement now is that Chairman Wontumi will report to National Security on Monday.”

Interestingly, Mr. Appiah also revealed that he was not contacted directly by Chairman Wontumi but by another lawyer who was outside Kumasi at the time. He admitted he had not yet spoken to his client to confirm whether a formal invitation had been extended to him.

I can’t confirm or deny whether an official invitation has been extended to my client. But what I witnessed here this morning was not pleasant at all, he stated.

Appiah questioned the scale and method of the operation, saying, Everybody knows Wontumi; he cannot hide from the cameras or the public. If you want him, you’ll get him. But the style used today is not good for Ghana. We are practicing democracy, not military rule.

He further criticized the action as a waste of state resources and suggested that such forceful approaches may be politically motivated. If what they are doing is, I am in power I will show you where power lies,’ then it’s not good,” he lamented.

He did acknowledge, however that the security team presented a search warrant.

The interview shared by GH One TV on their official Instagram page has since generated widespread public reaction, with many questioning the motives and methods used by state security agencies.

As of now, Chairman Wontumi is expected to report to National Security on Monday, May 26, 2025, for further engagement.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
