Tension in Bole as Youth Protest New MCE Appointment
Tensions have escalated in the Bole District of the Savannah Region following the confirmation of Abdulai Muhmod as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The appointment has sparked unrest among sections of the youth who have expressed strong disapproval, claiming the nominee lacks local support and was imposed on the community.
On Thursday, aggrieved youth took to the streets of Bole, burning tyres and storming the premises of the District Assembly in protest. The situation became more alarming as some protesters reportedly issued threats to attack the residences of key political figures, including Deputy Lands Minister Sulemana Yusif and former President John Dramani Mahama, who hails from the area.
In an interview with Adom News, some of the protesters argued that Mr. Muhmod is not a familiar figure within the district and questioned his allegiance to the local communities.
One of the youth leaders, Saaka Shaibu, voiced deep concern:
“Before becoming MCE, Mahmoud was saying that it is high time the Mole people dissociate themselves from the Gonjas. So this kind of person is who you want to make MCE?
The statement reflects deeper ethnic and political sentiments that may be fueling the unrest, with some residents viewing the appointment as a threat to local unity.
In response to the protests and threats, a strong security presence has been deployed to the area to maintain peace and order. Law enforcement officials have assured residents that steps are being taken to protect lives and property and to prevent further escalation.
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is yet to issue an official response to the developments in Bole. Meanwhile, local authorities are engaging community leaders in dialogue to help calm tensions and address the concerns of the youth.
The situation in Bole serves as a reminder of the need for inclusive and transparent processes in political appointments, especially in areas with diverse ethnic and political interests.
