Ghana AIDS Commission Warns of Rising HIV Cases During Kwahu Easter

The Ghana AIDS Commission has raised concerns about the rising number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the country, revealing that more than 500,000 individuals are currently affected. The national HIV prevalence rate stands at approximately 1.7%, with significant regional differences — the Eastern Region recording the highest rates, while the northern parts of Ghana have the lowest.

Speaking to Adom News during the 2025 Kwahu Easter celebrations, Dr. Prosper Kharmacelle Akanbong, Assistant Director of the Ghana AIDS Commission, underscored the need for Ghanaians, especially revelers, to prioritize their sexual health by practicing safe sex.

There are enough condoms available for free distribution during the celebrations, Dr. Akanbong assured. He encouraged the public to take full advantage of these resources to protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

The Kwahu Easter Festival, known for attracting large crowds from across the country and beyond, often sees an increase in risky behaviors including unprotected sex. The Ghana AIDS Commission’s message this year is clear: prevention is better than cure.

Dr. Akanbong also pointed to troubling connections between rising HIV infections and risky social behaviors, including drug abuse and illegal mining. He cautioned the youth to stay away from such activities, noting that they not only endanger health but also jeopardize the future of young Ghanaians.

The fight against HIV is not just about treatment. It’s about education, behavior change, and access to preventive tools, he stated.

The Commission is intensifying its public education efforts, especially during high-profile events like the Kwahu Easter, to reach more people with vital information and services. Stakeholders believe that through collective responsibility, Ghana can make significant progress in reducing new infections and supporting those living with the virus.

As the celebrations continue, the Ghana AIDS Commission is calling on all partygoers, residents, and visitors to enjoy responsibly, look out for one another, and embrace safe health practices.
